HARDLOCK - Self-locking nut!

Hardlock - The worlds strongest self-locking nut! HARDLOCK logo

The worlds strongest self-locking nut!

The Hardlock Nut will stay intact through heat, high power throughput and the most severe vibrations. Japanese Railways have specified Hardlock Nuts for more than 40 years.
In the UK, Network Rail have specified Hardlock Nuts for over 10 years, with new applications being added to all the time.

  • A better fastener because it resists loosening by vibration
  • Easy to fit – Combines the benefits of a free-fitting nut and a self-locking nut
  • Reduced inspection and maintenance time
  • Reusable – Can be fitted after removal, saving time and money

How does it work?

Hardlock Nut consists of a (red) Convex "fixing" Nut that has a truncated protrusion arranged off-center on the upper part, the (green) Concave "locking" Nut is designed with a concentric conical depression for locking the two nuts together.

By tightening the concave nut onto the convex nut, a strong perpendicular load will be applied to the bolt from both sides. Due to the strong locking force created by the Wedge of the Hardlock Nut, no matter if it is exposed to severe vibrations and/or impacts the Hardlock Nut will stay intact.

Applications

Applications:

hardlock application area energy
Energy
Before
Wind turbines are located in areas with strong winds, and due to irregular stresses caused by high wind loads, double nuts and spring washers are often used to prevent loosening. Nylon nuts are used to fasten the cable tray’s wires inside the tower and the ends of the ladder, but loosening still occurred due to micro-vibrations caused by the rotation of the blades.
After
By using the HARDLOCK Nut, proper torque and bolt load could be maintained at each fastening point. As a result, the need for regular maintenance was reduced and costs were significantly lowered.

hardlock application area mining & excavation
Mining & Excavation
Before
Hydraulic breakers used in large mines and quarries employed double nuts tightened with high torque. Strong vibrations caused them to loosen daily.
After
The HARDLOCK Nut is used to overcome loosening with the proper tightening torque. The HARDLOCK Nut works with standard thread forms, so no changes to bolt specifications were required, allowing quick implementation.

hardlock application area railways
Railways
Before
When a train passes, a force of 500G is applied to the turnout, and even specially shaped double nuts used on the moving parts could loosen daily. Although the turnout (moving part) is essential to maintaining track gauge, it is extremely difficult to maintain gauge while also preventing loosening.
After
By using the HARDLOCK Nut, maintenance costs related to inspection and retightening were reduced. The HARDLOCK Nut maintained the track gauge and simultaneously prevented loosening of the turnout. As a result, the HARDLOCK Nut has been adopted by all railway companies in Japan.

hardlock application area trains
Trains
Before
In high-speed trains, repeated impacts at rail joints cause the nuts to loosen and even risk falling off. Damage to the friction ring also causes loosening.
After
By using the HARDLOCK Nut, even under repeated impacts, loosening is completely prevented. Friction ring damage is eliminated by using the HARDLOCK Nut, which has been adopted by many train manufacturers.

hardlock application area construction industry
Construction & Electrical Industry
Before
Anti-loosening measures such as double nuts and spring washers had been used, but vibrations during transport and micro-vibrations occurring after installation resulted in frequent loosening.
After
By switching to the HARDLOCK Nut, all problems related to loosening were completely solved. Since loosening does not occur, both inspection frequency and retightening work have been significantly reduced, resulting in labor savings.
